To me, my mother, Ruth-Ellen Joeres, was a strong, intelligent, and deeply independent woman. She cared deeply about learning and dedicated so much of her life to teaching, research, and helping others think more deeply about the world around them. Growing up, I always admired how driven and capable she was. She held herself to high standards and encouraged those around her to do the same.

In the last few years of her life, I especially appreciated the time we were able to spend together and the chance to grow closer. As an adult, I came to understand her in a different way — not only as my mother, but as a woman who had lived through challenges, built a remarkable life for herself, and stayed true to who she was. I will always be grateful for those years and for the opportunity to know her more fully.

Our family is also deeply grateful for the kindness and support of Ruth-Ellen’s friends, especially Cathy Parlin for helping transition her from Minnesota to Washington, and Noela Banta for the care, friendship, and support she showed my mother over the last few years.
